This shrine was built to enshrine Sugawara Michizane, deified as a God of learning. It is said to be one of Japan' s three Tenjin Shrines, together with Kitano Tenmangu Shrine in Kyoto, and Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine in Fukuoka. Many people visit throughout the years. There are various events, and Gojinko-sai (hadakabo), one of the highlights of winter, is a renowned festival with brave participants
